APPLE TV-Creating a Virtual Environment!
It's the start of a new school year! You walk into your classroom only to find a NEW TECHNOLOGY!!! Don't sweat!!! APPLE TV is easier to manipulate than an interactive whiteboard and requires little training to use effectively in your classroom!!! This page is intended to be a sort of "APPLE TV PD" and generate excitement using the tool within the educational community.
What is APPLE TV???
Apple TV is a little black box that can work miracles in a classroom. Built largely for entertaining purposes by Apple, Apple TV is used increasingly in the classroom by educators who primarily want to take advantage of the mirroring capabilities of the device. For those who are not familiar with the term
“mirroring”, simply put, a key feature in Apple devices called “AirPlay” can literally mirror or project your device’s screen (iPod/iPad/iPhone) wirelessly via an LCD projector that is connected to the Apple TV.
Why use APPLE TV?
Simplicity!!!
Teachers boast that set-up takes minutes. All you need are 2 wires (APPLE TV power cord/HDMI cord), an iPad or iPod/iPhone, and a projector! (possibly an adaptor)
Getting Started!
Start-Up Video- The first part of the video should be done by IT but watch the "mirroring" process at the end.
Here are the "mirroring" steps again!
1. Turn on the TV/Projector connected to the Apple TV.
2. Ensure each device is on the same network.
3. Double tap the home button on the iPad.
4. Swipe to the right until you see the options below:
5. Tap the button that is blue in the image above. This displays the available devices for use with AirPlay.
6. Tap on your Apple TV’s name and then slide Mirroring to ‘On’.
7. That’s it – your iPad should now be showing on the screen connected to your Apple TV!
Student iPads can be "mirrored" too! How cool is that! Imagine the possibilities!!!

Setting up and "mirroring" is the easy part. Listed below are some examples of lesson plans and apps to use on the iPads along with APPLE TV. Some lesson plans may not exactly relate to your grade or subject area, but as a teacher I like to look at lesson ideas from fellow educators to get the wheels in my mind spinning!
*Eventually would like to make categories by subjects for both apps and lesson plans and a category for Common Core. Possibly ELL and Special Needs as well.

- YouTube videos
- Seamless transition between video clips (comparison between renditions of a play, perhaps)
- Annotate documents live with your students
- Display pictures of student/teacher work
- Demonstrate apps
- Play review games (many free ones available on the app store)
- Subscribe to Netflix? Show relevant documentaries or shows.
- Rent thousands of titles from the iTunes store.
- Use as an interactive whiteboard (whiteboard apps)
- Access to iTunes U videos
- Use of the Khan Academy app
- Creative project presentations (student ice-breaker collages)
- Walk the room while still remaining connected
- In a 1:1 iPad deployment, students can share their screen on the Apple TV
- Use as a document camera
